The implementation of the Nagoya Protocol poses some challenges for the academic research sector in Germany.
Nevertheless, there has been a lot of learning by doing. By sharing experiences and learning from one another , the research community can work towards overcoming some of the challenges.
Here we share experience from German institutions that have been dealing with Nagoya Protocol compliance.
Every compliance story is a little different so the types of information provided vary but we try to tell you things like:
- what institutional policies have been adopted
- how responsibilities are divided among different parts of the institution and who is involved
- how awareness-raising has been done
- how document and sample management is organized
- the resources invested to deal with compliance
- challenges faced
We hope this helps! Do you also have a compliance story to share? Let us know.
Lessons learned
There are some general lessons learned which may be helpful for researchers and institutions want to deal with their compliance obligations.
You need to communicate strategically. Information provided has to be adapted to the needs and level of understanding of the target audience. Information also has to be targeted. Don’t be surprised if some people are more receptive to understanding and accepting their compliance obligations than others and know how to deal with it.
