ABS in Europe
13th GNP-HuB Meeting ABS in Europe
The Stammtisch 13 brought together researchers, national authorities, and policy experts to explore Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) procedures in Europe, with detailed perspectives from France, Spain, and Romania.
Melania Muñoz (Leibniz Institute DSMZ) opened the session with an update on the network’s activities and plans for 2025. The first thematic highlight was the launch of the Easy ABS Guide – France, developed jointly with the French ABS authorities to help non-commercial researchers navigate the country’s declaratory system and clear application timelines.
Spain followed with an in-depth look at its ABS framework, including Royal Decrees 124/2017 and 429/2020, which govern access to wild taxa and plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. Presenters shared practical advice for researchers, illustrated by a case study on marine biodiversity permits.
Romania concluded the country focus, outlining its application process and key exemptions for basic research.
The meeting closed with a forward-looking presentation from the European Commission on the upcoming review of the EU ABS Regulation, encouraging stakeholders to participate in the consultation process.
